Antique Doll-Yang Kuei-fei Edo Period
An Antique Doll, Edo Period, The Chinese Immortal Yang Kuei-fei
An Antique Doll, Late Edo Period c.1850 , The Chinese Immortal Yang Kuei-fei
The great beauty, Yang Kuei-fei, married the Tang Dynasty emperor Xuandong. Intercourt battles forced her to committ suicide. Her love story and great beauty were the source of popular Japanese art.
Here, shown as an immortal, the doll stands 34cm high (without stand) and has an elaborate costume as the Japanese imagined Chinese dressed. There is a cherry blossom, pine and bamboo design on her silk brocade kimono. The long sleeves are outlined in crepe silk of red and white. A purple brocaded collar with cherry blossom design drapes like a shawl around her shoulders.
Overall condition is very good. There is a slight loss to the painting of her eyebrow.
